Day IV
The most Southwestern Point of Africa is located on top of a hill that is larger than life and the hike to reach it is both invigorating and exhausting, here is some of our trek from an incredible view...
an idea of how high we were.
Amongst the people... we had lunch at our cook, Ivy's house with the neighborhood kids who loved pictures & playtime.
Minstrel Carnival... true to much of South Africa's history, turning tragedy into triumph lies within this parade. After touring to Cape Town in the mid to late 1800's, the American minstrel entertainment or 'blackface' inspired the people of Cape Town to instead dress up and mock their counterparts with 'whiteface.' It is celebrated on the "poor man's New Year's" on January 2nd (because they traditionally had to work for those who could afford to take off for New Year's & New Year's Eve). On that day you can find entire neighborhoods dressed up with painted faces, glittered outfits and dancing to rhythmic bands throughout the streets. We were such lucky tourists to see the parade near the infamous Long Street and here are just a few highlights:
"Cape Colored" creates some of the most beautiful children.
In the words of Fei, a classmate on the trip, in response to this experience:
"I am not worthy."
